Vaughn Bode

About the artist
Vaughn Bodē (1941 – 1975) was a mythmaker. An underground comics icon of the ’60s and ’70s, his work fused sci-fi surrealism with street-level irreverence, birthing a universe of bodacious lizards, mystical wizards, and unapologetically weird rebels. With Cheech Wizard as his crown jewel, Bodē’s visual style—thick lines, warped proportions, psychedelic swagger—laid the foundation for the graffiti explosion that followed. Though his life was brief, his cultural impact is massive. At Mania, we recognize Vaughn Bodē as a prophet of style whose legacy lives in every tag, bubble letter, and freaky form scrawled across city walls.
