In Wonder, Hebru Brantley reimagines heroism through the lens of his iconic character Lil Mama—stoic, steady, and geared for battle. Dressed in a reworked golden headband and lasso, she’s not posing, she’s processing—caught mid-thought between power and purpose. This 18-color screenprint, released in 2018 in an edition of 120, blends comic book nostalgia with Brantley’s ongoing narrative of Black girlhood, strength, and redefined icons. Framed in an ornate gold frame, the piece carries weight—mythic, modern, and built to be seen.

About The Artist

Hebru Brantley (b. 1981) creates worlds where imagination is resistance. Rooted in Afrofuturism, comic book aesthetics, and hip hop history, his work reclaims childhood iconography to confront race, power, and possibility. At the center of his universe is Flyboy—a goggled avatar of defiance and wonder, inspired by the Tuskegee Airmen. Brantley’s murals and sculptures breathe life into Black narratives with bold color and mythic energy. From Chicago walls to global art fairs, his work carries the charge of a movement. At Mania, we view Brantley as a world-builder—an artist who turns nostalgia into a launchpad for liberation.
